ACDEG 55 Youth Campaign

About ACDEG_55

The #ACDEG55 is an exciting Youth Campaign commencing on July 16th through September 28th, 2018. It is an innovative campaign designed to spotlight One African Union member state per day to ascertain its status on ACDEG and raise youth awareness on ACDEG in that country on that day. Prior to the day set aside for each country, youth will be encouraged to mobilize their peers and to do a special activity on the day their country is being spotlighted and to use social media to promote their activities. All activities from each country will be registered and reported on this website called www.acdeg.africa and will be promoted on social media. At the end of the campaign, outstanding country activities by youth shall be profiled in the 2018 ACDEG55 Photo Book.

The African Charter on Democracy Elections and Governance (ACDEG) was adopted by the African Union on the 30th of January 2007 during its 8th ordinary session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ACDEG officially came into force in 2012 when the mandatory minimum of 15 member countries of the AU signed.

The Charter was developed by African experts to address Africa’s peculiar governance challenges, and serves as a blueprint to encourage and foster better governance across the continent. The Charter sets out international standards in areas such as Rule of Law, constitutional changes in government, free and fair elections, respect for human rights and is founded on the supremacy of the constitution. ACDEG calls for a continental commitment towards democratic and participatory governance and bids to commit the 55 member countries of the AU to strive towards responsive, participatory, democratic and representative governments while maintaining stability, peace and security. Among the 55 countries in the AU, 46 have signed, 31 have ratified and 31 have deposited the charter. click here to download the free youth  cartoonized version of the charter
